Relationships and Health Education Proposal

Parent and Carer Consultation - 6th - 30th April 2020

What are we proposing?

All but one of the new units of work within the 1 Decision Scheme of work complement and are part of the new compulsory Relationships Education and Health Education framework. We have mapped the 1Decision units to our existing Citizenship curriculum so that it is clear how the new resource complements our existing provision while ensuring that we are teaching everything outlined within the new guidance. Individual sample units of work can be viewed on request; simply email the school office to request sample materials. Here you can also view some sample pages from 1Decisions Workbooks for children. We will not be purchasing the workbooks in their entirety but will instead select the activities appropriate it our children, context and curriculum.

Our Newly updated proposed Progression Document for Relationships and Health Education (RHE) clearly details our curriculum including the 1Decision units. Below you can view our draft Relationships and Health Education policy which will be edited and finalised after the end of the April 2020 Consultation period.

 Why are we consulting?

You cannot withdraw your child from Relationships Education because it is important that all children receive this content, covering topics such as friendships and how to stay safe. Additionally, the science curriculum in all maintained schools also includes content on human development, including reproduction, which there is no right to withdraw from.

Your Views and Right to Withdraw

However, primary schools can choose to teach Sex Education. At Booker Hill, we are keen to gauge your views about whether we should include the additional unit of Conception to our newly formatted PSHE / Citizenship / Relationships and Health Education from September 2020.

The Conception unit of work would only be taught as part of the Year 6 Growing and Changing unit. The content of the unit can be viewed through emailing the school office to ask for a copy and it is this unit of work that we are most keen to gain feedback from parents and carers on its inclusion into or exclusion from our curriculum. The final decision of this consultation will be published in Summer 2020.

If feedback suggests that this unit of work should be included within our curriculum, parents and carers will maintain the right to ask that children are withdrawn. At primary level, the head teacher must grant this request.
